A couple months back I decided there was a need for an opensource firewall distro that rivals the commercial ones, but there wasn't one. With that in mind I started one. It consists of a php backend and a frontend. The 2nd version of the frontend is being planned out to be done in flex2. At the moment the php frontend and backends needs a couple more developers to help out since I dont have alot of time anymore and I want this project to get somewhere.
What I am working on is not another IPCop distro, as it is designed to be run on high performance hardware. It developed to be a distro that can handle the demands of large users, so this interface is extensive.
I really can't go into the specifics without confusing others (including myself), but you can check out https://demo.astaro.com to see what I am trying to create.
I really don't have much requirements for this project other than the will to learn, but here is some knowledge that is preferable:
xhtml, advanced css, advanced javascript, advanced php, php security, linux + network security, web design

Need developers for opensource firewall distro

True, using an older language like perl would be better for a backend, but I decided to use php since it seems there are more people who understand it and for the backend I decided to stick with it to reduce the amount of different languages used. Although, there still might be areas that perl will be used.Jenk wrote:Good luck on your adventure, but wouldn't something like Perl, or C be better suited, than PHP for the backend?
As for smoothwall and ipcop, they seem to be still targeting low performance or embedded systems, while this project is targeting high performance systems. While most people would rather have a low power box in their corner for their firewall, obviously there are those who need a high performance system that can handle content filtering, virus scanning for email/web, statistics, etc... That is our aim

hmm from looking at the 3.0, it doesn't look very amazing... I still think that astaro and clarkconnect blow smoothwall out.DaveTheAve wrote:Well maybe if SmoothWall would get off there "butts" and release a better version (Like 3.0 is supposed to be) more people would like it. As for now, I use smoothwall with TONS of mods... waiting.....onion2k wrote:You'll be competing with SmoothWall.
btw: I started an sf.net page for the web interface https://sourceforge.net/projects/spotsecng
