Hello!
I am absolutely new to this so I am going to sound every bit as nervous as I feel about this.
I am a schoolmaster who wants to keep abreast of technology and all that, and have bought domain name and space on hostmonster.com.
I know what I want on the site ... the database, the functionality, etc... but I just do not know how to go about it (Everything I know about IT and computers, I have taught myself... and so there are huge gaps in my education...!)
Since I do not have ready access to professional help of any kind, as since I am very keen on developing this as soon as possible, I was wondering if there is any body 'out there' who wouldn't mind chipping in and helping me set up a site. I do not have money to offer, but in the spirit of the open source world, I will give full credit to the creator.
This is, I realise, a real shot in the dark, but then, I tried.
Thanks.
Rajesh.

Hello,
I can help you if you are interested. My project (buiBase) is not open source but free to use. I can install a copy in your site and you and whoever would like to use it can create a person website quite easily. I can help you too if you needed.

What you need to do is really look at what what you are actually needing. Is this going to be HTML pages that rarely change or a dynamic web site with forums etc. From that you can start to look at the component parts and how to implement them.
The first thing to do is try to teach yourself HTML and CSS. You may want to look at a few Free CSS templates which are available if you look around the web. Start with a couple of static pages. Then when you want to have more of a dynamic web site you can start to look at things out there which will assist you. If you want a forum for instance, connected to a database, you could look at the phpBB Forum (it's the basis of this site). You should be able to download it, customise it and simply plug it in. I am sure there are blogging bits and pieces out there as well which should be simple to "install" and use. The key thing in your situation is to start small and build up, all the while accumulating bits and pieces of knowlege.

You can use buiBase to do all those things as suggested by CoderGoblin without learning HTML/CSS first. But if you learn or know HTML/SCC you will able to build your site exactly the way you wanted. There are many systems (a lot of them are open source too) able to do the same thing but finding the right one for you may not be easy. Good luck with your project however.
