Developer Looking For Work

Hello! I'm just a youngin, 18 years of age, but I've been messing around with web development for a good 5+ years.... when I finally get to the point of wanting to actually make a career (or some extra cash to say the least) out of it though, I was stopped dead in my tracks by realizing that.. while I've messed around plenty in the last 5 years, I never made much of anything that was permanent that would be good for a portfolio. So now I look to anyone and everyone that needs some help with most anything. My main area of interest is PHP/MySQL, as far as web design goes, I haven't read a single XHTML book in my life, at first I found tutorials by searching through AOL... soon after though my father started me out with 'The Idiots Guide to Creating a Web Page' 2nd Edition, since then I haven't touched anything but CSS and Javascript book or two... Big mistakes - hence why they're currently sitting on my desk. However! I don't want any kind of lack I might have in any web development language to hinder any chance I might have at work. I've certainly read through enough scripts to understand the basics of most languages, and even for those that I have not, I'd like to take any chance I can to work on something, learning a new language along the way certainly won't hurt me.
So in essence, I know PHP/MySQL the most, but I'm willing to give a stab at anything and everything out there, the worst that happens? I learn parts of a new language and fail to get the project done on time, not a great lookout, but the best I have.
I'm unsure if I'm allowed to do this, so please correct me if I'm not... but if you've got any questions or anything...

*edit* I guess it wouldn't hurt... my MSN is the same as my email... if you want any others just ask and I'll setup an account.
And... one other thing - any words of advice from everyone else here as to where else I can find places to work? And where I would most likely be able to find a few cheap jobs to do? Thanks!
