Instructor Wanted: Teach Me Php & MySQL

Post by yellowlabproject »

I am new to programming, learning VBA currently. I have no real HTML(some HTML, just not anything to write home about) or Php experience, I understand the premise and will pick it up quickly. I am looking for someone who is willing to share and pass along their knowledge to another. My learning style is that of interaction as opposed to reading a book, (I will read, just prefer to have interaction w/ another to solidfy ideas and concepts, and not rely solely on written material- not the fastest reader either :-) ).
Please contact me via PM if you are interested in teaching Php and/or MySQL.

Doug

Doug,

My best suggestion is that you get a book (O'reilly books are usually pretty good), and start going through it. When you start hitting a point where you need interaction, post your questions here.

I think you get a lot further a lot faster doing that than trying to get someone to take the time to walk you through stuff.

Though, if you want I could do it for the right amount of money

If you want, I could give you my AIM name. I'd be willing to help you out through that... I'm rather new to php myself, but teaching other people about a subject always helps me to solidify things in my own mind. :)

Trial and error is the best way to learn! :P
Set Search Time - A google chrome extension. When you search only results from the past year (or set time period) are displayed. Helps tremendously when using new technologies to avoid outdated results.

Hey Doug!

I am in a very similar position. I've had lots of exposure to PHP, but never learned to write it from scratch.

I've got the beginnings of a CMS that someone wrote for me and it's a great start but he doesn't have time to complete it. It could be a great project to learn on and mess with if we can find someone to help us figure out what does what.

Chalks, could you PM me your AIM or Google Talk name?

Maybe, if you have tons of time...In my opinion reading books is far more productive in long term. You don't get sip of this and that..but get solid understanding...and then can build solution to problems easily...
Yes, books only doesn't do much either :) You'll have to write code at some point

Well now.. Books are great, however manuals are so much better, ever heard the phrase rtfb? i think not!

Personal choice = never use anybody elses code, remake everything myself, especially all the things that are in pear, and use the manual as reference - coupled with the odd forum and new list to get ideas going, solving problems = experience, you learn by your own and others mistakes.

As a retired college professor, let me emphasize one point:
People's modes of learning are quite varied.
What works best for one person will not work well for everybody else.

Besides the differences in reading vs. doing, some people are visually oriented, some are tactilely oriented, some are audibly oriented. Teachers know this and must adapt their teaching styles to a mixture of these modalities.

A friend of mine insists that just plain communicating is often impaired when two people have a discussion, if their natural thinking patterns cross those lines of orientation. Differently oriented people process language in different areas of the brain. He also claims that you can get a pretty good clue of a person's orientation just by listening for certain kinds of words that people use in casual conversation. A visual orientation person is likely to use phrases like, Let's see, ... and I'll have to take a look at that ... and I don't see why .... An audible orientation person will more often say things like, That sounds okay to me ... or Did you hear that they're going to .... And a tactile orientation person may say, I don't feel that's necessary ... or I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole! Now, honestly, I'm a little dubious about my friend's claims, but he is quite serious, and says that he often listens for such clues when he is having trouble communicating with someone. He tells stories of colleagues that he at first found that he was constantly arguing with, only to realize that he is visually oriented and his colleague was tactilely oriented, etc. I tried to get him to tell me what his wife's orientation is, but he won't tell me! :P
