For All the Web Developers!

Post by draco »

Hello everyone!

I am looking for a few people to join my web development team. My plan is to gather a few programmers and a couple of designers to create a web development team. We would begin by creating and contributing to a few open source projects to gather experience and learn how we work together as a team. After this, as a team we would take up some freelance work and do it for free (or very cheaply) to increase our reputation. Once we have established a good reputation and good team work, we can begin selling our service. Any money earned would be distributed accordingly to each team member on previously agreed terms.

As a team, each member is treated equally and has an equal say in the team. We will decide as a team what projects to work on and all decisions will be made as a team. We will have weekly meetings (over IRC or another protocol) to discuss the progress of our current project and our team outlook. At these weekly meetings, members will have a chance to voice their ideas and suggest projects for the team to take on. Along with the weekly meetings, each project will have its own meetings to discuss its progress. Not all the team members will work on the same project all the time, sometimes the team will be split between projects and some members may work on more than one project at a time. It all depends on you and the status of the project.

To keep the team in order, I will lead the team myself however the team's ultimate destiny is decided by its members. I have already thought of a few suggestions for the first project. One of which is an object-oriented PHP5 framework that implements the MVC design pattern.

I can't promise that you'll make lots of money. However, I can promise that you will take part in something great. You will contribute to the open source community and have your name on various projects. Working on a team you will learn new programming practices and methodologies expanding your experience. Any work you contribute you can always put into a portfolio for future job opportunities.

I am looking for 3-5 dedicated programmers to participate. You don't need to be a complete expert in any of these fields just have some experience and be competent. Everyone is welcome to apply even if you don't have experience in every one of these fields.
  • PHP - Most work here will be done in PHP5
  • MySQL
  • XML
  • JavaScript
  • Object Oriented Programming and Design Patterns
  • Subversion Version Control (SVN)
  • Any experience with HTTP servers
I am also looking for 2-3 good web designers. You must have a few original designs that you can show and prove to be yours. You should have experience in these fields:
  • Standard W3C (X)HTML
  • XML
  • CSS and simple JavaScript
  • Take a look at the Google Web Toolkit (GWT)
If you would like to join the team, simply drop me an email at xdracox@gmail.com. The subject line of the email should be "WebDev Team Application." So that the whole process is smooth, please include the following details in your email:
  • Full name
  • Alternative contact information (IM, other email, etc.)
  • Which position you are applying for (programmer or designer)
  • Short bio, doesnt have to be your life story. Just something to get to know you
  • Skills you possess that will help you contribute to the team
  • Any other information you would like to share.
  • Examples of your work
I look forward to reading all your emails and to get this off the ground ASAP. Remember, its xdracox@gmail.com

Good question :).

I am 18 years old and I am attending the University of Texas at Arlington working towards a degree in Computer Science. I have been programming since I was 11 years old using a program called GameMaker and its language GML, if you can call that programming. I started learning C and C++ when I was 12 and made simple console applications. When I was 14, I discovered a language called PHP and was immediately hooked. I learned how to make a website do whatever I wanted it to, which only increased my sense of pride. I learned how to connect to and interact with MySQL databases and I was always looking to learn more and push my limits.

For a while I programmed in PHP in a very procedural manner. Like everyone who just started PHP does. About two years ago I learned about object-oriented programming and I learned how to apply that to PHP. I also learned about design patterns and how useful they are. Along with PHP, I learned what every web developer should know: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, and the W3C standards.

I have also run my own home Linux server (the CD drive busted somehow and now I can't do anything with it). It has Debian installed and of course it runs Apache with PHP5 and MySQL5. I also use Linux for my personal use. I have Ubuntu 8.10 installed on my laptop and it runs beautifully.

Would you like to know anything else?

I used to be a manager at a fast food restaurant, if that counts :D.
As for software projects, I do not have any management experience, however I do plan on developing that experience through this team.

I hate being the bearer of bad news. Still a young guy myself, I have attempted similiar feats in the past all of which has failed miserably. Time is far too precious and asking people to commit their the required time to pull anything meaningful off is a large commitment (especially when there is no money incentive).

My advise to you, create your own opensource project (or join an existing one) and work from there without the aspiration of develop a functional team. Build your own programming and management skills in a no pressure environment then once you feel confident enough perhaps hire a few people.

Things just get far too flaky going this route. Trust me.

Thanks for the warning :P.
I thought about what you said and I agree. However, there's no harm in trying and who knows? Maybe this might go somewhere! I think that by taking the proper measures and making sure everyone on the team can voice their opinion it could turn into something great.

I had thought I would do something like this before to but never got around to it.

Well I am not sure if I want to be a member of your team or not, but i am interested in offering something to start with, and wish to offer my help by give you a project to start with, and maybe help you get a team.

I really have not come up with any scripts of my own, but I have been customizing and fixing scripts since I was 13 years old, anyway I was planing to make a free browser based game with a few purchasable add-ons I want it to be written in, either php or asp and I have already started planing the gameplay and such, but I fear it is going to take me a few years to make... and the fact I am not to sure where to start, 'scripting wise'. Basicly I can do most of the Database side of things, and I would need a team for the engine/interface scripts.

If you do chose to help me with my project, I can offer a part in future profit from it, and this could make a base of income for you team as well.

I can also offer my assetance if you ever need extra help.

Looking foreword to hearing from you.. I have sent you an Email
