Sounds like you're using redhat?
Right click on your 'desktop' and there'll be an option to open a terminal there somewhere in the list.
(I've only ever used gnome/kde once -redhat7.3).
Headless boxes are way more fun
You might need to change to root to do certain things, though

thnx RTT, by the way, i have another user, called 'user' which i want to give admin rights, i changed it's group to 'adm' and it works very well, the only thing is that i don't have access to '/root', how can i enable this?

Heyyy, long time no speak dude. Anyhow, being unable to come online has given me plentiful - maybe too much? time to explore and crash redhat

.
at the log in screen, you can actually log in as root and configure stuff. and for normal uses, switch back to your normal user account. i find this more comfortable rather than using the terminal.

heya Nay! i say the same!

I have successfully installed linux and seems highly stable(i'm playing music using Winamp2), not XMMS or whatever the name is

and it's great, the only thing is that i can't install anything that has to do with MS cuz it says that i can only install in windows 98,xp,nt etc etc
If you wonder how i do this, i'm using [google]wine[/google], u can find it in
http://www.winehq.org, it's free of course

and if u can't get online in msn try to download [google]AMSN[/google]
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... p_id=54091
EDIT: i did what u said before, but i wanna know how to enable the normal user access to /root

wow, amazed i got that right - only ever used redhat once

(slackware is far better!).
to get to /root, you'll need to type 'su root' in your terminal window and then supply the root password

It's advisable to try to do as little as possible with root though and only use it when you need it, though

from what i think, log in as root and go to the users and groups manager thing and check all the boxes for you

............but seriously, i think it's done that way.
i screwed up my redhat a little yesterday, so i'm getting the real original CD's from redhat sometime today and reinstall everything all over again. but before that, i also want to take apart my pc and clean all the unneccesary junk and trash inside it. eg: my 56k modem. man, when was the last time i used that O_o

by the way, i already did the users & groups thing,

and thnx RTT i'll try the su root thing
