Is the machine a Dell or have an LG CD-ROM drive? If so, you may want to install only older versions of Linux on the machine. Newer versions have known to totally DESTROY Dell computers and computers with LG CD-ROMS...

October 24th, 2003 - Important notice! - Several users have reported a big issue with LG Cd-rom drives used with Mandrake Linux 9.2: these CD-rom drives are not compliant with ATAPI specification and therefore can be damaged. All details, future updates and possible fix related to this issue are available at this page. Other Cd-rom drives are not affected by this issue. Update - Nov 20th, 2003: LG has released firmware updates to various CD-Rom drives models, as well as a restoration procedure for frozen drives
I do not know if this is just Mandrake, or if it were the kernal or what. All I know is that it might be it?

1. It's not a linux problem with the LG CD's. It's an error in the firmware for the LG CD's.
2. thomasd1's problem doesn't sound like his CD ROM isn't working anymore. "I can boot (with the cd) to the installation menu, but then it stops recognizing..." Sounds more like a problem with the installation in some manner.
3. "Not working" is the same thing as "something wrong". This means, the best answer anyone can provide is "Fix it." =)

That's ok. Linux isn't for everyone. 98% of people that try it, don't stay with it.
