this is a serious question and im not trying to start a debate

i currently have RH9, and i hate it, ive heard excellent things about mandrake (8.1 is the latest?) is it really better than redhat, for which i paid £35 for

i mainly want to use it for web servers btw, and general programming

whats the major ups and downs in comparing each other

Thanks

eagerly awaiting some responses

Actually they are the same thing really. In fact, in the versions before 6, Mandrake was officially called Redhat Mandrake. May be you should give Fedora a try? Mandrake is a little bit more simplified than Redhat. Chances are though, if you hate Redhat, you'll probably hate Mandrake too. For servers I recommend Slackware. Friends of mine run servers off Debian and Gentoo as well.

Actually, they were only the same at incept. Mandrake needed a place to start from and they chose Red Hat. But even at Mandrake 7, you could see where they had significantly veered from what Red Hat was and the direction it was going. Mandrake has it's own tools for setup and administration. None of which came from Red Hat.

I think Mandrake has allways been the best looking most user friendly distro out there. It plays to the user and desktop. But it could be used for anything that the others are used for.

Cheers,
BDKR

I guess we should ask what you really hate about Redhat?

Redhat & Mandrake still have a lot of the same things. Like they both use RPM's (Redhat Package Management), init structure, directory/file structure etc. Mandrake uses Grub primarily, while Redhat is more LiLo still I think. Mandrake has created its own tools for management and install. So really it boils down to what exactly do you hate about Redhat and does will that same hate exist in Mandrake?

I beleive debian is the best :) lots of packages and very nice to work with. if you dont feel like installing all the disks, you can downloads knoppix and use that to create a debian image ;)
