A Peculiar Fedora Core 2 Test 2 Installation Problem
I am unable to boot the first installation CD for Fedora Core 2 Test 2. I have tried two different CDs burned from ISO image files I downloaded from two different servers (the source and a mirror) in case the first download was corrupt, but each time I try to boot from either of the CDs, I receive an error message about no operating system being found. This same system can boot CDs for Slackware, Knoppix, and even Fedora Core 2 Test 1, so I am rather puzzled about the current failure. Has anyone else run into this or a similar problem?
By the way, does anyone know of a good spyware-free MD5 checksum verification utility for Windows (I use multiple operating systems)?

Something of your own design? If it is something you downloaded, I would be happy to read up on it and download it myself if you just tell me the name.Pyrite wrote:I have a small 15k one, what's your email ?
Sure... if I had a floppy drive. I have, however, been thinking about using a different CD to boot then starting the installation process on the Fedora Core CD (the CD does contain accessible files; the CD is just not booting).Pyrite wrote:No idea about the boot problem if Test 1 works then Test 2 must be screwed. May be you can try the boot floppy then use CD method.

Thank you for the information and the suggestion. The site you mentioned is not accessible to me right now; I might try it again later or search some of the download sites.
No, I already deleted all of the old partitions from that drive. I want to do a clean installation anyway.Pyrite wrote:You can't just put the CD in the drive and run setup and do an upgrade?
Thank you...
Thank you for the link. That looks like a useful package, but I will try to track down something with a more easily traceable history as I am rather untrusting of executable files of unknown origin.

Two MD5 Programs for Windows
The following both seem like decent freeware MD5 checksum tools for Windows (a wonderful platform for downloading GNU/Linux ISO images then burning them to CDs):
WinMd5Sum
http://winmd5sum.solidblue.biz/
MD5 Checker
http://www.lucamauri.com/md5checker/
WinMd5Sum is quick and easy to use--perfect for verifying MD5 checksums of downloaded files--although after a brief appearance of the hourglass mouse pointer it does not provide any feedback beyond hard drive access sounds and a light or two on the front of your case (if you have a light or two connected to your hard drive, that is) while it is working on large files. MD5 Checker offers more functionality for those who need it, but it does so via a more complex interface. WinMd5Sum is open source software while MD5 Checker is not.
According to both applications, my suspect Fedora Core 2 Test 2 CD is good, so I remain puzzled about why it fails to boot.

Clarification

That sounds like a worthy project.
That sounds like a worthy project; I have already been thinking of doing it, but I should finish some other projects first.
Re: A Peculiar Fedora Core 2 Test 2 Installation Problem
Same thing here. I have verified the iso file with MD5. I have even recreated an iso from the CD I burned, the MD5 still checks but the CD still doesn't boot. There is no floppy boot image to fall back on.Brian wrote:I am unable to boot the first installation CD for Fedora Core 2 Test 2. It seems that we are not alone; several people have reported this same problem via Bugzilla:JanPB wrote:Same thing here. I have verified the iso file with MD5.
