Hardened Gentoo 2005.1 LiveCD can't login

Post by AngusL »

I downloaded hardened-x86-2005.1.iso - which is theoretically a LiveCD of Hardened Gentoo (but not one of the ones to install it, I know the difference). I've burnt it, and can boot from it - but my problem is that it asks me to login... what's the default root password? Normally it's specified, but I couldn't actually find very much documentation for this. I've also seen this question asked at least once elsewhere - and I have done some considerable Googling, so please don't just bounce me to there. If you do find it via a search, please tell me what query you used. :D

I know I can crack the password file but... Life's too short, and I'd rather not.

Anyone got any ideas?

There shouldn't be a root password... you just hit enter then type "passwd" to set your own ;)

Maybe they do something different with the hardened disks but putting a password on by default seems silly to me :P

PS: Gentoo rocks!

Yes, a Gentoo user! ^_^

Some live cds put a default there so you don't have to set it, but if they do they usually just print what it is on the screen. I think slax uses toor. :P

The root password is randomly generated at boot apparently.

user:hardened
password:hardened

Then change root password from there - X11, shell, or whatever makes you happy.
