I would always go with the newest version if you have the chance. More bugs have been fixed, more updates will be available longer, etc.

Also check out CentOS - it's basically Red Hat Enterprise Linux without the hefty fee from Red Hat. http://www.centos.org for more info, downloads, etc.

Also, PHP is up to 4.4.2 I think.

Actually Fedora has one of the most robust and up to date systems around.

There is even one command string you can enter and have everything you've installed updated to the latest versions. PLus you can enable an autoupdate system that will check for updates every night and install them for you.

Have you even used fedora? Don't knock an OS just because you like its alternative.. provide reasons why he should use debian other then "because I like debian". If you want to suggest Debian that's perfectly acceptable but the "forget fedora" part is what I have a problem with.

i used fedora 1 time,i think i like the debian because i can just use the netinstall image rather than dling all 4 of the ISOS.

There is no "Best Server OS".
You should use what you like.
I for example are using SuSE Linxu on my Root, and I'm more than satisfied.

SuSE strikes me as more a deskop distro. By default it's installed with a desktop environment and the package management with YaST is pretty poor IMO. I used to uses SuSE a lot before I experimented with other distros.
