Fedora Core 5

That is the version of CD set I have ordered because I am plotting my switch from Windows -> Linux.
What pushed me over the edge with windows? Well while working on a very important class for a client, Windows CRASHED and claimed to have an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_BOLUME. After looking up some fixes and attempting them, I came down to the last straw. Re-Installing. So I lost all my work, applications , etc.

Its time to get with it and go with Linux. I have talked to some friends and they reccommended Fedora for people like me who are not totally new with Linux.

What Im asking is if anyone here uses Fedora or has and has any tips? Any tips on converting from Windows to Linux?

Thanks!

Can't help you with Fedora I'm afraid but I do have a few notes:

There's nothing to say that your FS won't screw up in Linux like it did in Windows... but.....
If things do screw up you'll have a lot more avenues for repair work even if it means using a Live CD.

That said... I use just about *all* open source/free software on my linux laptop and I pretty much never see crashes... the odd time I use windows I actually get quite wound up and frustrated because something always seems to go wrong for me... but I'm biased.

When I finally broke down with Windows woes about a year and a half ago, Fedora was my choice as well... and I'm very happy with it. I started at FC3 and am now using FC5. Installation is a breeze. I started with KDE and switched to Gnome. As was mentioned, http://www.fedorafaq.org/ is a great resource. Once you get you system installed, start there first. It'll get you setup with all of the essentials:

- yum for updating/installing software
- mp3 and video support
- flash, java, etc. plugins
- much more

Also, fedoraforum.org and linuxquesions.org can be good resources.

Good luck
