Ubuntu now

I first started with Knoppix, then decided something more permanent was in order...so I switched to RH as I had some CD's from an old book...
RH didn't like my new-er desktop, something to do with my cylinder range being larger than 1024 and LILO not liking that...so I decided to try Gentoo...download the base installer and step by step walk through the whole damn thing (takes me a good couple hours) reach right near the end and the GRUB installer f*cks up when probing for FDD...I dunno why but I'm irritated now as nothing happens for 40 mins so I reboot and try to just kick off where I left off, seems like all that B$ I just went through is pointless and has to be repeated...at least some of it anyways and now i'm tired of dicking around I need a desktop up and running to get things done (not use this irritating laptop).
So I've decided, I'll give Ubuntu a try seeing as most people claim it's excellent and it's the Distro that "Just works"
I look forward to experimenting with Linux and having other challenges like this, but I also need a development desktop I can use right now, so when I get tired of tinkering with Linux I can boot into a development desktop and work on code, etc instead...
Man what a day
