Ubuntu Rules! They have an awesome forum on their website and there is a good wiki here:

Also if you do a search here for Ubuntu for posts/threads by me, you'll find a lot of good info because this community rocks and they helped me out when I was getting started.

I can't believe I posted this in PHP - Code! Sorry, all the excitement made me forget to check which forum I was in. Could someone please move this?

This theme is kind of bright, btw. :/

I so have to try Ubuntu. I am stuck on Fedora Core at the moment, but I think I might spread my wings a bit.

Easy way to try it: virtualize! :)

easier way: it's a live cd!

Incidentally, I ran across ubuntu as a server platform today in this interesting virtualization offering: http://www.slicehost.com/

What do you think? Will ubuntu be your next hosting platform?

I found this package manager thing, which is neat, and I'm in the process of getting a bunch of stuff, but I'm still trying to figure out how to get stuff as source and compile it, rofl.

I have no idea where an appropriate place to extract this archive would be.

I was also curious about how you guys get your beloved window's programs to work (photoshop, illustrator, trillian, etc), do you use Wine or something else?

I'm also curious about a good place to find theme's since I find the default one very bright and hard to look at. I was thinking about trying one of those new fangled 3d accelerated desktops, as well.

P.S. WHY DIDN"T I SWITCH SOONER?!

What I did was make myself a directory somewhere (maybe in /usr or /tmp) and extract all my archives into that directory. Then install them from there. Typically the installation will automatically pick where it is going to go.

ubuntu blows. 'nuff said. it's linux for people who are afraid of leaving windows, and poeple who REQUIRE a gui. in reality, you don't need a gui to run linux. and if you understand linux, you know that (practically) every program (including the gui) runs through the shell. try gentoo.

of course, every linux distribution can be made into another distribution... but using ubuntu, you'll never learn how to fully control all the power that is linux. it's dainty linux.

What exactly is wrong with running a GUI? (Besides that it's not l33t)

yea IMO that was a really lame couple of sentences, boo_lolly. Just because you "Don't need a GUI" to do something doesn't mean it's not nice to have one.
