Fedora is great and it has my vote. I have it installed on several computers.

Don't install Fedora yet 7 though... it's very buggy at this point. It needs to age a bit.

Look at that, I'm finally original. Who was the one voting FreeBSD? Yes, that was me :)

Although I know it wasn't meant to be a desktop OS, it's my choice above all. Oeh, and uhhh... since when is FreeBSD a "linux variant"? 8O :D

Fedora Core stopped at release 6. After that it became just Fedora.

My vote is for Gentoo, because of speed. there is no other operating system that can compare to the performance of gentoo (AFTER you get everything compiled of course). My desktop system runs gentoo, I can turn on my computer and be into KDE and have firefox open in ~20 seconds. Last time i used ubuntu (7.10), it took 1 minute and 30 seconds just to get into the GUI, windows usually takes about 5 to 7 minutes. oh and all the programs run a million times faster as well. Not to mention the control you have over the system.

I can vouch for your numbers on the GUI desktop linux. In Fedora 7 I go from cold to desktop in 59 seconds. On windows XP Pro SP 2 it takes about 7 and a half minutes.

Shutting down Windows takes about as long and that is without updates taking place. Fedora shutdowns are about 40 seconds.

Pull the power cable out? Meh, who worries about correctly shutting down computers these days?

For those that are looking for an Ubuntu install on top of a living Windows install, there is an app available now that installs the Ubuntu OS as a Windows application (meaning you can install and uninstall it without partitioning and all that other headache).

http://wubi-installer.org/

It is pretty neat, though right now it loads Ubuntu 8.04 (a Beta release) by default. You can change that though by placing any version ISO in the same directory as as the Wubi installer.

Anyway, just thought I would throw that out there for those that are a but timid about jacking with their current machine.

I should have updated... Wubi is now included with the Ubuntu 8.04 Live CD. I have been using Ubuntu from a Wubi installation for about the last week or so and I am fricking in love.

Ubuntu is the most awesomest flavor of Linux for desktops EVAR!

I'm forced to use Fedora, but I prefer apt-get based distributions.
