Looking to dual boot Vista / Linux

Well, I'm pretty much completely new to Linux, down to the point where I don't even know where to start, so I think I'll just cover the basics of my situation:
I've always been interested in using Linux, and want to take full advantage of my computer's specs with it. I'm currently running Windows Vista, and have a dual-partition 120gb HD (with 49gb free on the non-windows partition) The PC has a 1.73ghz dual-core processor, a fairly nice graphics card, and 1gig of Ram.
I'm looking for suggestions on:
+ What distro I should use for my PC.
+ Simple set up instructions that will allow me to dual boot.
+ Suggestions for programs to expand the capabilities of my computer while running Linux.
Thanks, all help is appreciated.
