Well, I hope you have a fast connection, because the easiest way to get around this is to download the text-based installer. To do this, go to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and check the "alternate cd" checkbox. What this will do is give you an image that does not include the live CD or GUI installer.

Once you get it installed, let me know and we can work on getting your resolution higher than 640x480. :P

I was able to get it installed and I'm now at my desktop. (yay!) 640x480 is still the only resolution i can use however.

Okay, open a terminal and type 'system-config-display'. This should bring up your Display Settings. Click on the Hardware tab, and select "Generic LCD Display > LCD Panel 1280x1024" from the list. Once you've done that, go back to the Settings tab, and select a higher resolution (I'd try 1024x768 first). Apply the changes, and restart your machine.

Let me know if it works... if it doesn't, we'll have to do some digging around in xorg.conf. :)

what model of motherboard it is? if your computer is a Dell, what's the service tag?

btw - http://ubuntuforums.org might be a better resource than here, since we're primarily a PHP forum

You seem to be in somewhat of a pickle...

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/s ... /specs.htm

Intel 845GV chipset
integrated Intel 3D Extreme Graphics

linux driver: http://tinyurl.com/96vz4

Seems to be a linux-wide problem :-(

I searched everywhere on Dell for that thing you linked to there. Thank you very much for that. It looks like my dell has an Intel 845 chipset which i found an article that may fix my problem. It gives a solution that loads during startup for 8xx to 945 chipsets. I will give it a go and report back. Thanks very much!

I found a thread on the ubuntu forums that I'd like to try. It has you edit your xorg.conf file. When i try to save it after editing, it says i do not have permission to save. Do I have to log in under a 'root' user or something in order to edit it?

UPDATE: I gave up installing Ubuntu on the computer i was trying to install it on. Nothing i did seems to work. So i have decided to install it on my Thinkpad T60 and dual boot XP. I put the live CD in to see if the screen resolution would be any better and it was. I have multiple options for different resolutions that i usually use which is what i need. Thank you all very much for you help. Its greatly appreciated.
