fedora remote desktop on webserver?

Whether you are using Linux on the desktop or as a server, it's still good that you're using Linux. Linux related questions go here.

fedora remote desktop on webserver?

Post by potato »

Goodmorning,

i'm doubting to reinstall a webserver with fedora7 normal, so with a graphical interface.
This for the remote desktop function.

Now there's fedora6 without any interface, so only webserver, ssh.

I know that it gonna take more resources from the server. But is it that much more, or is it considerable to do?
My server is a 2.8Ghz Celeron with 1Gb ram
Maybe if i put one extra gb of ram?

greetings,
Tom

It can be done, but a server doesn't need a graphical interface.

You can X forward and you can VNC. You can also handle remote logins with xdm. I have to wonder why though. X does use a lot of memory, and depending upon which dekstop environment you run, it can use a fair amount of the CPU too. An extra G of ram would easily cover it... probably an extra 256MB would cover it, but I have to wonder why you'd need this still? I'd strongly urge you not to X forward without SSH tunneling too... it's very easy to eavesdrop on people without the SSL, in just the same way it is with telnet.
