Switching from Fedora to ?
I think I'm calling it quits with Fedora. With each release comes more bugs. They seem to be focused on an extreme release schedule and are sticking to it even when a release is loaded with bugs. These bugs are interfering with my productivity.
I'm looking in Suse and leaning towards it. 10.1 or 10.2 I believe. I noticed a lot of votes for Debian so I'm going to research that as well.
I'm going to be removing Vista from my laptop and replacing it with Windows XP. I figured it would be a good time to get rid of Fedora as well since I'll be mucking with partitions.

Re: Switching from Fedora to ?
I would advice you - Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo - in this order (well, Gentoo is a special one
)
There are 10 types of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't
Re: Switching from Fedora to ?
The Ubuntu live cd won't boot on my laptop so I don't think it would install either. There are no errors or anything, it just stays on a black screen. I'm not fond of how Ubuntu has the root account setup and I feel like Ubuntu is more for people moving from Windows to Linux. It's a bit AOL'ish to me or something.
What do you like about Debian? I'm fairly proficient in Linux so if it's because of APT that probably won't be enough for me to use it.

Re: Switching from Fedora to ?
Well, I used to work with Slackware - there is no apt, no any package manager (indeed, there is, but a "true Slacker" wouldn't use it
). But it's so hard to keep your system up to date this way, especially when there are more than one server to administrate. Debian has a big community (i.e. a lot of howtos for Debian), a lot of binary packages - http://packages.debian.org/stable/ (i.e. no time-consuming compiling). I like its start/stop scripts for services, the system file/directory organization and many more.
I used Slackware for 2-3 years and when I migrated to Debian (honestly, there were a few moments when I hate the "Debian way") I did like it very much. You will get used to it for a week (worst case).

Re: Switching from Fedora to ?
Debian is solid. It's also "minimalist" so it'll only install what you want installed. Ubuntu is based on Debian, but obviously with a lot more out-of-the-box.
Slackware is another option.. similar to Debian, in that it is minimalist, but as pointed out there is no default package manager - though you can install any that you please. Gentoo is lovely (don't forget I'm biased..) or there is Arch which is Gentoo-ish but no compiling, binary based.

I think I had the Ubuntu live cd working on one of my 4 computer's I've had it on. I always download the "Alternate" edition, and install it directly from that(Opposed to booting in the live cd, then installing).astions wrote:The Ubuntu live cd won't boot on my laptop so I don't think it would install either. I can say that i still think of myself as novice in the linux world though. I finally switched over completely last June. (It was one of the best choices I have made, it has changed my world)
I would defiantly choose a Debian type Distro though. At my job we are doing the same, switching from SUSE to Debian(Ubuntu, not my decision, but I support it), on all our our new clients servers, and the old when they are ready for a upgrade. (I work for a Web-Based EMR Company, we install servers at every office).

Re: Switching from Fedora to ?
I have installed Suse now. I don't have the system setup 100% yet but so far I'm pretty happy with it. Overall it is far more responsive than Fedora was. Opening programs is much quicker and it's a lot more snappy.
Gftp still has the same bug it's had for about 5 years where it just closes itself in the middle of transfers and firefox it still slow. I'm switching to Opera. Opera on Suse is insanely fast.
I've got my /home partition encrypted and that was easy to setup during the install process. Entering the password is strange because it keeps prompting you for it while your typing it in which is confusing if you're looking at the screen.

Re: Switching from Fedora to ?
Unlike Fedora it hasn't asked me to register it. Everything included on the main dvd is open source. There is an addon cd that contains closed source applications such as Adobe, Flash and software such as that.
I can't get my ALC268 soundcard to work right but I couldn't get it to work on Fedora either.

Re: Switching from Fedora to ?
Well the issue is the Alsa drivers so it shouldn't matter what distro I use. My laptop has tweeters, mids and a subwoofer and I haven't been able to get all of them to work right yet using the latest Alsa drivers and tweeking the modprobe file.
Re: Switching from Fedora to ?
Ok - after spending two days getting everything setup, configuring php, mysql, importing databases and websites, installing software and blah blah, I just rebooted and everything - EVERYTHING - is back to default. The entire /home partition is now back to how it was with a default installation. Everything is gone.
If I wasn't able to control myself I would be sweeping up pieces of this laptop. <span style='color:blue' title='I'm naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> doesn't even come close to how I feel right now.

Re: Switching from Fedora to ?
Suse is out. If I had paid for this OS I would be demanding a refund. I just installed everything and got everything setup a second time and now it has deleted the entire contents of the /var directory.
Ubuntu is out. If I can't login as root I'm not going to use it. Guess I'm off to do more searching.
