Ubuntu » Won't boot from disc

Hello, world!
I have Vista on my computer, and was trying to boot Ubuntu from a disc, but it won't do it. I tried changing the boot order in the BIOS, and useing the boot menu to boot from the disc. Still not working. The only file on the disc is the Ubuntu OS I downloaded. The file is called "ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso". Written to a CD-RW.
Why is this? I'll try to boot from my 1GB USB drive, and see if it works...
Thanks!

How did you burn it?
Burning just the iso on the cd will not work.. You need to burn it with an iso burner, or image burner.
(Iso is an image format)

Oh. Would I do that with the "Burn Image to Disc" option?
Thanks.
P.S. USB drive didn't work.

Yes! It works now, with Sonic "burn image to cd"
I clicked "start or install", and it opened a dialogue box, that says "Loading Linux kernel", and it got to 100%, and seems to be stuck. Should I try again?

That's odd... try the Ubuntu forums?

Yeah, it sounds like the CD burn had a problem, possibly. You can request free CDs to be sent to you
postpaid directly from Ubuntu!
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/shipit-faq, although it takes from 6 to 10 weeks for delivery.

Thanks. I tried the "check cd for defects" option, and it did the same thing...odd
I'll take a look at that mail disc thing.
Thanks!

The CD-RW I was using had been burned, erased, and then had Ubuntu burned onto it. So, I tried to burn the os to a brand new Disc, and the problem was different...
Instead of opening the dialogue box, and then having the black screen with the cursor forever, it just froze for about 5 seconds, and then did nothing. I could try again, and same thing. Then, I went to the more options menu, then hit F1. A box came up in the top-left corner, and then dissapeared, and the screen went black and said "boot:_", and I typed "live" and hit "enter". Then, it said "Loading", and then said "Invalid or corrupt kernal [something]". I also tried typing nothing, and it did the same thing.
To conclude, I think it must be a corrupt download.
I'll check into that ShipIt disc thing.
Thanks!

It does sound like it might have gotten corrupted during the download. I'd suggest you go ahead and order the free disk (no way you can lose, but it may take some time, unfortunately), but in the meantime, you might want to check the MD5 checksum. I'm sure there's one on the site from which you downloaded. In case you don't already have a MD5 checksum utility, there are several free ones available, including this one:

Thanks. Planning on being at a hotel sometime soon, so can try to download it again. This time, with uTorrent.
If that doesn't work, I guess I'll go ahead and order a disc.
