Dedicated IP

Post by alex.barylski »

Why do some hosting companies (shared) advertise the fact they offer unique IP's?

Virtual hosting with Apache works with a single IP. I assume however that FTP/SSH require an IP address.

If I had 12 clients on a single virtual machine (virtual web sites) using Apache and I wanted to offer each client SSH/FTP could I not have them each login using the IP address instead of their domain names?

WHy exactly would I *need* a unique IP...is this to support domain logins with FTP/SSH or other protocols?

Sometimes you need separate IP's for SEO purposes. Google keeps track of the source and destination of links, and downgrades their importance if they are on the same IP.
