Making A simple home server

Post by nickman013 »

Hello,

I want to make a simple home development server. I got a old computer. I think its pentium 2 !!!. Anyway I want to host it on Linux. So how would I go about on getting all the software like, mySQL, PHP, and Perl, CGI and all of that stuff.

Is there like a CD that Linux runs off of that has it on it?

Can someone please help me and start me off. Thanks.

hi, linux is an operating system, which now has many forms. u can load it from a cd but would be best to install it. its free which is the bigger bonus, you can download it from all kinds of sites, i cant think any off the top of my head but im sure u can find sumthing in google!

the fedora line is probably ur best bet if ur new to it all. once youve downloaded it u just need to burn it to a disc or however many is needed. usually as an iso. depending on weather u burn to cd or dvd but there is help usually on the linux sites about that sort of thing.

any once u install linux if u install the web server set up which u will see in the options whilst installing apache and cgi stuff should be installed and set up straight away for you. i think you can even get it to do mysql and maybe even php i cant quite remember. have a look in the options.

if not still do not fear! mysql and php are both free also which u can get from php.net and mysql.com :)

hope this helps.

It's an operating system... you download the .iso file, burn it to a CD, boot your PC from it and then follow the instructions to install it ;)

EDIT:

Also would you be able to tell me which one is suitable for me, I see there is alot of versions.

THANKS

just take fedora's newest version. if your not really picky about it,it is your best bet because the newest security patches will be in there. it will have to go over windows(delete). If you want linux off of a CD,try knoppix

It won't write over windows, but from what I remember it will format the drive (erasing data on it). You can set up a separate partition for it but then you're messing with the bootloader and you could very easily make your PC un-bootable (where you have to format from a boot-disk and re-install windows or linux). Your best bet is to backup the data on the computer and just install it from a fresh drive.

Another option is running linux inside a virtual machine
