I'm sorry to hear that you had to go through all that. Did you happen to read through the manual for installing PHP on Apache 1.3 on WinXP in addition to the manual installation steps also described in the PHP manual?
When I installed PHP on my local machine a few months (here at work) I installed Apache, then MySQL, then PHP, all according to the manuals' instructions. And everything worked fine out of the chutes. XAMPP is nice, but it totally takes away from your skillset as a developer, escpecially if you are ever hired not just to code, but to actually be able to manage the server.
