Server distro recommendations (linux)

Post by Luke »

My boss and I have decided to set up a testing server. We're going to be using it to stage all of our PHP and anything else we need to stage or have clients proof or just any general testing type needs. What are some recommendations for two guys who know almost nothing about linux other than my home machine running on ubuntu?

set up a virtual machine - that way you can just "roll back" to your vanilla install - plus it's like having many testing machines in one!

Yeah virtualization is pretty nice in this regard (if rolling back is needed.) Reminds me of the Ghost systems we used to install.

Any specific software you guys recommend for virtualization?

I haven't needed to virtualize on a linux box as yet, sorry.

For Mac, I like Parallels and PC, VirtualPC.

I know a friend uses VMWare almost religiously.

VMWare is what I am looking at now. I'll give it a try and let you know. :)

hmm... I installed vmware server and opened it up, but all of the options are grayed out except for "Connect to host". I think this may be because I never entered in a license number, but it never prompted me and I can't find where to put it in. I'm going to send a support request to them, but I just thought I'd ask here as well in case anybody else has run into this issue. thanks. :)

Far as I remember, you just need to register an account to get the free serial number?

Depending on which archive you downloaded, you should just have to connect to localhost...

@kieran - that option is grayed out... strange. I know I never put one in.

@nickvd - it's telling me it cannot connect to localhost because the target machine actively refused it.

OK, I've got it working now, but I'm trying to set up a new Virtual Machine with Redhat Linux, and whenever I do, it runs through the Windows 2000 installation wizard. Is that what it's supposed to do? :?
