server/nameserver change

I asked my hosting company to move me to a server where I could have a custom nameserver with static ips.
So I changed my registrar's nameserver (NS) settings from :
ns1.myhostingcompany.net
ns2.myhostingcompany.net
to
ns1.mydomain.com and static ip
ns2.mydomain.com and static ip
I made this change 24 hrs ago and during this time my web site and email have been down. Firefox shows "Server not found" and my email program shows "host not found".
The hosting company told me it takes 48-72 hours to the DNS to propagate. I looked up my site in a few whois sites and they all have the new nameservers. I can also use a ftp program to upload files to the new server.
Is this propagation the cause of my site/email being down or can it be something else that's wrong ?
