smtp limitations?

Hello All
I seem to be encountering a problem. Whenever I mail out my newsletter to approximately 7,000 subscribers, other emails (such as registration verification emails) get lost for a while and are never delivered (in fact I can't confirm they are even being added to the queue).
Does SMTP sendmail or whatever (yeah, i'm not exactly sure.. probably exim?) have a queue limit? Is there some configuration setting I can mess with to ensure all emails get delivered?
