I understand the problems you are having. I brought a new laptop with Vista pre-installed and it was good for a while for web development, But i really do recommend going back to XP the performance is soo much better and its a better all round computer. However i am testing Windows 7 at the moment an i have to say that is 10x better than vista its so much more powerful, running it on a 512mb computer with Windows 7 ultimate public beta installed and have had no problems and is as fast as XP running with 2GB of RAM :D

As you know "hosts" file was used for IP resolving before the DNS services have been used in Internet. So, nothing special about "localhost" - it's still a domain name ;)
