Gimp animation: transparent background - dropshadow problem

Post by Montague »

Hi,
I have been searching help regarding a problem I have, and found this forum. Perhaps one of you guys can help me.
I have created an awesome gimp animation and it works great except for one small problem.

Basically I have a golden ring that revolves 360 degrees.
I use 25 frames that replace each other with the commands (100ms) (replace)
I have a transparent background.
If I add a drop shadow to my frames, the shadow appears as one solid black block.
This happens if I place a shadow to each frame, as well as if I place a single shadow.

A further explanation would be:- if we forget about the dropshadow, but simply make each frame 50% opacity - then the playback does not show the transparency, it shows the solid ring as if transparency is 100%.

The only time I can get it to display correctly is if I give each frame a solid background. (Like - add shadow, add background, merge down.
This ruins the effect I am trying to create of a ring floating in the air.

Am I trying to do the impossible?

Have you tried changing the opacity on the LAYER with the drop shadow? If that still doesn't work then i would say it's not possible in GIMP but it's certainly possible in the ADOBE equivalents: Photoshop and Fireworks.
