Anyone know how to reproduce this in Illustrator

Hi All,
A few months ago, I created a draft copy of my departments logo. They liked it quite a bit so it is now being put in quite a few different places. However, I created the logo in Photoshop, and I would now like to reproduce it in Illustrator, so it will scale better. Here's the original photoshop version:

I've figured out (more or less) how to create the circle, put on the gradient, and make a drop shadow around the edge. What I still need to figure out is how to make it look like a grid. Ironically, that's the most prominent feature of the circle, once it's incorporated into the the whole logo, and it's the 1 thing I don't know how to do.
Are there any Illustrator gurus out there who know how this might be done? I've got Illustrator CS.
Thanks a bunch folks!
