What do you look for in a graphics application?

Whats the most important feature to you in a graphics app? Could be anything. Also, what tools could you live without?

Basically, I'm looking for suggestions about what should and shouldn't feature in PHPhoto (see sig).

The Intuitiveness and a bit newness and a little bit showy / flashy...

Do you really like showy/flashy stuff in an application? I'd have thought making it as useable as possible would be more important, and generally that means as little flashy stuff as possible..

i would say ease of use would be most important early on. perhaps you could have different 'modes' for it: simple, and advanced - in simple mode, lots of the more complex features are hidden, with simple mode being suited to basic image manipulation work.

advanced mode, on the other hand, could rival photoshop!

that way, people new to the app could get to grips with it without being scared by a complicated interface (eg. photoshop or the gimp), and, once they have learnt it, they can move onto 'advanced' mode, where they can do all the complex stuff!

just a thought, based on my own experiences with image progs.

Yeah, I've planned for a beginners/advanced interface. Thats definitely a good idea.

As for rivalling photoshop.. thats the idea.

I've thought about including that actually. When you're writing software for a stateless system like a webpage its feckin' tricky..

PHPhoto - Now that is a sweet idea.

As for features....Your best bet is looking at the main features in Photoshop.

Another way or getting research on this project is to sign up to a few graphics forums and ask graphics developers too :)

Icé

i dont do much graphical work, and as such im still in the newbie pot.

so for me, Intuitiveness and ease of use is HUGE. i LOVE tooltips on hover :)

as for what i use a lot of- i mainly use effects on text.
shadows, bevels, gradients, embossing and other various effects

i also like the mess around with general filters/effects on the entire image when im starved for inspiration
