Firefox doesn't interpret WMODE="transparent"

Post by besbajah »

Hi there,

I've got some nice flash buttons on my site. They work fine and the buttons have a transparency setting that works fine in IE6 and Netscape7.

However, I've just installed Firefox 1.0.4, and the transparency is no longer, no longer visible, if you get my drift. You get the buttons, but this 'visible' background.

For IE I use: - <PARAM NAME="wmode" VALUE="transparent">
no worries
For Netscape I use: - WMODE="transparent"
again, no worries.

Any idea what to use for Firefox?

It's a bit of a concern seeing that this browser's usage statistics are around 20% now.

Cheers,
Bes.

it needs to be in the <embed> tag.

ex:

Code: Select all

<embed wmode=&quote;transparent&quote;>

Yes, it IS in the <embed> tag,,,

<EMBED src="graphics/buttons/MainEN06.swf" WMODE="transparent" quality="high" menu="true"

...that's the first part of it anyhow.

I don't know whether I mentioned that it works fine on Netscape. It just doesn't work on Firefox 1.0.4. Any other ideas?

I found this information on the Macromedia website: -

Supported platforms for WMODE: -

Internet Explorer 3 or higher (Windows)
Internet Explorer 5.1* and 5.2* (Macintosh)
Netscape 7.0*
Mozilla 1.0 or higher*
AOL*
CompuServe*

As you can see, it has Mozilla 1.0 as supported, and that IS Firefox is it not, or the derivative.

I don't understand why I can't use the wmode in firefox, that's all.
I've tried taking out the quotes, uncapitalizing, etc....

it works fine for me on a site that I built a year ago with some transparent flash buttons:

http://www.clanseasons.com

I have 1.0.4 and it works no problems.

Well, here's the acid test then:

I've just pasted in - http://www.clanseasons.com/
into my newly installed Firefox browser and I get: -

Ummm, just a wide block at the top of the screen. It works fine in IE though.

OK, it's something with my installation of Firefox. That's good, I'm happy that it just seems to be a local issue.

Can you do me a favour? Yes/No

Paste my link: -

http://www.interpretacao.com/Code%20Tests/Flash.html

into your copy of Firefox and tell me if it looks OK, on a white background.

Cheers,
Bes.

Wow, you were quick, thanks.

OK, we've managed to isolate the problem, and that's the most important thing.
My copy of Firefox.

I reinstalled the Macromedia Flash 7 plugin, and guess what, waa-laa. It installed the plugin for all 'Netscape' type browsers.

It seems that the Firefox browser picked up the installation of the Flash plugin and thought it was all running OK. I installed Firfox on a clean computer and it simply told me to click here to install the plugin; why it didn't do that on my original computer, or detect something was wrong I don't know. My fault, as I should have known from the fact everything was working fine with Netscape that it was a particular problem with Firefox.

Ok fabulous, we got there, cheers for your help.
Now I know that 20% of the world can see my site OK.
