Well I'm trying to build a portfolio site for myself, but I'm having a lot of problems, seeings how i like to code in php, or html/css alot more then opening up photoshop. I struggle to make layouts : /
And i always end up hating my layouts : /
And it probably doesn't help that I haven't made anything in over a year..
(And I posted here, because the site isn't coded yet, its only an image, so i didn't post in UI Design/Usability..)
Site has changed much since this orginal post.
You can view the layout everyone commented on
here at deviantart.
And, and and...
Well I tryed to go for the more basic and clean look, but i just want some of your guys opinions, comments and critiques..
feyd | In consideration for our members who run low resolutions, I've switched the inline image to a link.

I like it, but I'd make the white portion stretch from the top of the screen to the bottom... that would be much better in my opinion.

I like the use of shadows and such. I would really like to see it in action though.

Not bad. Maybe go for a depressed bevel look when hovering the buttons rather than one that "lifts" out.

Nice, love the background.
I'd try more whitespace above the latest work/ portfolio headings.
I'd try some different things with the nav buttons. Instead of centering the text verticaly in the button, align it with the bottom of your name or with zoxive.com. Or you could redesign the menu altogether, the size of the buttons right now makes them look almost as important as your name.

Looks nice. Nothing to be ashamed of.
You could play a little with the alignment of content and whitespace. Right now each "box" stands on its own, with each box's content lined up/centered. For example: navigation text is centered in the tabs. "latestwork" is centered. Portfolio main text is left+right aligned.
So I would do two things: first, experiment with the alignment of the individual boxes so you create more of a tension in them. For example left and bottom align the nav text. Or leave a little extra whitespace at one side of the content of a box. Your name for example is quite big and fills up all the box it is in. Make that box bigger and give the name some breathing space.
second, try to create a kind of uniform grid. Meaning alignments of different sections are in line with each other. That's just a matter of pixel counting and getting all margins/paddings the same. If I see it right in the image, it's like some pieces are just a few pixels off. (or I need glasses

Yea, i didn't make everything "perfect" because i was lazy, and i would fix those things when i convert it to html+css. That picture right there is straight from photoshop.
And I'm very slowly working on it...

Looking good, I like it.
Maybe a small suggestion. Why not preload the mouse over buttons? The first time I hover your menu they come out rather slow.
Which gives a distorted view of what you are trying to accomplish.

What is your concept? Who is this for?
I read business and structured. Calm and detached.
It's a clean layout, and it's how you'll be perceived as. Which is great if that's your concept.
