so ie has issues with pngs even if they aren't transparent?

Alright, so I've been using 8-bit pngs instead of gifs lately. When I output my 64-color png, it looks fine in firefox, but when I look at it in IE6, the color is off by just a little bit (but enough that you can see the difference between it and the background). When I changed to gif, it looks fine in both. So IE has issues rendering pngs even if they don't have transparency? I wasn't aware of this.

I don't know if this community is aware of this, but man...

Yeah, basically the 'rules' behind using pngs (as long as IE is still in use

) is to only use it for images that don't need to match colors. Things like sprites / avatars, and things that should be surrounded by transparency with no need to blend in to rest of the page.

What program are you using to make your images? I get the same issue you get, saving in Photoshop, but if I save a png in Fireworks (.png is native) it works fine for some odd reason.

Reason why colors are a little bit different in IE is because pngs has gamma attribute, which IE is using a little bit differently.
Fireworks doesn't sets (or have some value, which doesn't affect IE) gamma attribute, while photoshop does.
To remove this attribute i use
http://entropymine.com/jason/tweakpng/ and then everything works fine. Just remove gAMA and it should be ok.

That's a great tip, however I shouldn't have to use yet another program to make things work the way Bill wants me to make them work...

Is there any stopping him, though?
