I'd like to make some seamless background texture images (think the background images from Linux and OS X). Another nice example of a texture is the background image that can be found at CNET...

Suggestions?

If it is mathematically regular pattern, like these diagonals, you just decide on the smallest image size and draw it pixel by pixel. Study some background images from real sites to see how it's done.
If it is an "artistic" pattern, you draw it however you like, then with Photoshop->Filter->Other->Offset you offset it with half size in both directions (make sure Wrap Around is selected). In that way what was in the edges is now in the center. Correct the seams, avoiding to draw on the edges (if needed, repeat the offset operation several times, untill no visible seams are left). That's all there is to it really :)

Well that is an excellent example of accessibility and usability. No thanks. That site had its chance.

That client side CNET site you linked to. I think I gave too high standards some times because typically when a site doesn't load like that I tend to not want to visit it anymore. Same fore sites that require plugins and sites that are built for an IE audience only.

Or sites that blast music and scare the living daylights out my sleeping girlfriend...

I'll acknowledge the design flaw, sounds get their own option in 2.8 and are disabled by default any way.
