I am used to paintshoppe pro instead of photoshop. So I need to relearn how to do everything.

Can anyone tell me how to make an image grayscale?

You should be able to find a "saturation" level somewhere, that would do the trick.

If you want really sexy b&w photos, there's a trick involving combining a saturation adjustment layer with a hue adjustment layer. Search up "post-processing B&W" on Google for a tutorial.

Or in the top menu bar.

Image -> Mode -> Greyscale

loosing the saturation is ctrl + u, but I recommend changing modes as this isn't permenant, neither is the saturation method if you create a backup.

Are you using CS2 or CS3? CS3 has a very nice new feature called 'Black & White'. Use it if at all possible.

If you have CS2, the most common way is to attach 2 adjustment layers to your image. The first being a Hue/Saturation layer like everyone has suggested. The second layer is a 'Levels' layer which will allow you to more finely tune the contrast & brightness of certain shades. The Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer in CS2 isn't very good - use the 'Levels' instead.

That's it, I couldn't remember the second adjustment layer. pickle FTW!

I use Lightroom (which seems excellent), but only on RAW files. Not sure where the performance edge comes from, the file or the app.

I'm surprised you use lightroom Kieran, It seemed pointless to me if you actually have a version of photoshop. I thought it was a great product for photographers who can't splurge on PS. It just didn't seem to offer anything more than Bridge and PS could offer for the $299

Lightroom is a really nice interface for post-processing, I recommend at least trying it! While it doesn't do anything that can't be done in Photoshop, the interface really does speed up my workflow. The "pick/unpick" interface is really great for sorting a shoot.

It's not without it's quirks, however, and I can only hope 2 addresses them.

Oh, and I HATE bridge, almost as much as I hate version cue.

Are you not using PS to save $$$$$$$$$$$$ It really is the best if you can afford it.
Best regards

:idea: yes to edit colored picture to gray scale, look for hue and (- +) saturation settings. It can help edit color for the selected photo.
