Please critique my new site!!

It doesn't matter if you do all the error checking in the world, or if you have the most beautiful graphics, if your site or application design isn't usable, it's not going to do well. Get input and advice on usability and user interface issues here.

Please critique my new site!!

Post by jossef »

Hi friends,

Please review sleeparama.com and give your opinion.
It is one of the most well known and well established beds, mattress and bedroom furniture providers in the state.

Sorry, it's pretty dreadful.
  • Layout broken. The footer background image repeats on some pages.
  • Tables used for layout. Tables shouldn't be used for layout. Use CSS. It'll reduce the amount of code and improve search engine access.
  • Everything is an image. Images aren't searchable so search engines and disability access browsers won't see any of the content.
  • No alt text. Accessibility dictates that every image needs alternative text. (IMPORTANT NOTE: There's a legal requirement for this in the USA. You could be sued.)
  • Things that look clickable aren't. The main image on the index screen looks like you can click through to the offer, but you can't.
  • Your tagline is says nothing. "Unmatched Value, Immediate Delivery" doesn't tell me anything about the company, what it sells, what your selling points are.
  • Items in the listings that are unavailable. Why is the first "What's New" item discontinued? That presents a very negative view of the store.
  • Empty categories. You have categories with no content, eg http://sleeparama.com/index.cfm?fuseact ... gory_ID=17 ... that looks terrible to a user.
  • There's no user feedback. There's no way for me to tell if something is popular or recommended by your customers. Where are the reviews? Ratings? Testimonials?
  • Checkout doesn't use SSL. You need an SSL certificate if people are going to trust that they can buy securely.
  • The login form is insecure. If I try to log in with "john" and no password I'm informed that the user doesn't exist. If I try "admin" and no password I'm told the password is incorrect. That tells a hacker that there's an account called "admin".
It's a start, there's something to work with, but it really does need a lot of work before it's ready to go live. I wouldn't recommend anyone actually buys from the online store until these issues are addressed.

Especially the SSL part. You are trying to run a store without SSL on the checkout? Not to be mean, but man, you must be crazy to think people are going to buy from you without a secure checkout!! I agree with all of onion's points. This site looks not only forgettable, but amateur. And I would never trust my credit card information with an amateur-looking website. There's just no way.

Looks like SSL has been addressed.

1. Color is nice but design is a little old looking.

2. Photo/thumbs have a white background should be transparent

3. No SEF URI which are pretty important for a shopping cart, no?

This was probably spam, so I'm locking this thread.
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.
