It doesn't matter if you do all the error checking in the world, or if you have the most beautiful graphics, if your site or application design isn't usable, it's not going to do well. Get input and advice on usability and user interface issues here.

Site design

/\ Possible deisgn for my site, it's fairly obviously not done yet, but that's roughly what it will look like - and I'll add PHP or database driven Flash to create a scrolling news ticker along the bottom, probably using mael or verdana in #FFFFFF or #333333. This is my first proper attempt at an ok design, so feel free to be critical but don't be too nasty. :P

yes, I'd have to agree, color would help.. The "interesting links" bit seems disjointed, and the graphic used in it's background feels odd too..

Okay, I'll add some colour, and move the interesting links (I can't just move the menu across since then it disppaears behind the flash. I'm afraid I don't know what you mean about a background graphic?

The font is fine for the navigational items but I'd recommend losing it for the main text which people have to read. I'm afraid my advice would be to use something like Verdana (only for where you have content text). Otherwise looks fine and the grey looks good. A small amount of another colour would give it a little kick though?

Personally, I don't like flyout menus as this is a web site not an application (IMHO). If you're going to use them, why not let them fly out directly below the main link 'Interesting links' rather than left or right? That way you won't cover up any other site content,

cheers,

Mike

I agree with mikeb, the " flyout" menus look a little odd on the site, some webside designs can use them, but they dont belong in your design.

Other than that, the desing is nice, but needs color.
