It doesn't matter if you do all the error checking in the world, or if you have the most beautiful graphics, if your site or application design isn't usable, it's not going to do well. Get input and advice on usability and user interface issues here.

Most of them talks about how to code in HTML and stuff and that isn't what i need. I like to learn about layout and color themes and those things.

I will check the next pages to see if there is any good ones.

I think those things you will have to use your own nugget (brain 8)).
Play around for awhile, get the hangs of things, find out what does and doesn't work... and before you know it you will have gotten a grasp on design :)

Planning or Fail

Post by bladecatcher »

G'day,
As a project manager of over 30 years I've got to disagree. There are those who plan to succeed and those who fail to plan.

A basic plan is required from the outset of *any* project and part of that basic plan is to develop a proper "Plan". Which is what I'm currently doing as I've never mamaged a web site deveopment before.

kind regards,
bladecatcher

btw, I'm called the bladecatcher because I catch falling projects (considered suicidal like catching knives) and put them back on track :-)

To be honest...you cant really teach design...it is very intuitive....you either have it or you dont.

You may be able to learn good design practice, but to be really good you need natural flair!

I'd guess your a young bloke Yes?

Anything can be learnt, as my father used to say to me, "Son you can do anything you *want* to do.

I have a Joseph Latrobe and 2 national design awards on my office wall to prove it. Design is a science as the great Leonardo proved.

A acquaintance recently won an award for a site here in Aus, when I went there using my 2Mb connection it took 2-3 minutes to load, I lost interest. There is far more to design than pretty gif's.

I get a feeling this debate could be a lot like Creation vs Evolution so I might exit stage left.

kind regards,
bladecatcher

im 25 if it makes a difference.

You say these people "learnt" design....how do you know the flair they illustrated wasn't just the natural flair they had in them. Some people just dont have this natural flairs.

I work in the Design & Advertising industry...some people have it, some people dont.

There isn't a set of rules to learn to be a good designer...as i said before it is down to intuition...and some people just dont have that.

Yeah, i agree design can be learnt to an extent...but i mean to be really good, you have to have that something special that not all of us have...and will never have.

Sure, i will take this say to the extent that all the creative dept. needs those guyz ( and gals ;) ) who have it in them. It is the talent of one's inner self that speaks in their design not learning. Well, you can train someone specifically in designs but can he come out with it himself relying on his own. Nah! without having that guts, you will need a push every time you set to do something.
For ex. the Fasion Industry - some out there regularly churn out already clichéd and boring drab ones and some are those who are trend-setters. So guyz, it is really one's inner self in the end that speaks out and shows. ;)

Color theory is a field of its own respects in art. Many a painter spends time studying the subtleties of real life painting, where colors pop up in the most unexpected places.

Or are you just talking about unification? In that case, don't match red with green, try to have white backgrounds over black text, cut down on background images, and you'll be fine.

Layout? That's very difficult. You're best off researching the different types of layouts and going from there. Implementation? Even harder. Most people tell you to stay away from tables but... hmph.

There's SOOOOO much about web design, a tutorial couldn't possibly cover all of it. Try getting a book.

Seek inspiration through the layouts of popular websites, and seek the hard facts through the experts who tell you never to put light green on white.

At least, that's my two cents. No links. Sorry.
