The xhtml isn't compliant, but you asked about nav, so I'll focus on that. ;)

Its all a little over-large. At the default text size, the buttons have a huge amount of wasted space. At one above default, they fit pretty well. At two above default, the nav splits between two lines, ignoring the buttons. Just mentioning it. I actually deeply prefer text links for nav, but the method you've chosen of overlaying them on graphics isn't ideal, I think.

The left nav seems to be redundant. It doesn't show all the choices, and it is already available at the top. Pick one or the other for less confusion. Also, it seems to show the current page (php), something which you could accomplish with styling the top nav choices. Notably, left or top is fine - both are extremely common in web nav, and for good reason (they work well there).

I'm not a big fan of the box-in-a-box title ("Hello world"). Not sure how I would do it differently, but it looks a little 'crunchy'.

Finally, Courier is a fairly harsh choice for website fonts. Its good, since its cross-platform, and fairly well supported, but visually, not so appealing.

Just my thoughts.

the left nav is not available at the top.... go back to the site please and look again....or actually don't look again if you don't want ;) You could take my word;)
also, how bout if i changed the box around hello world to just a right border to seperate the two? would that work better ya think?

No offence, but I don't really like the overall design. I mean, it's a good base to start from, but you lack a color theme. I guess it's just a matter of tatse, because teaste differs from person to person, but I do believe that you need to find a color theme that your website could fit in.

Try to make one of your own.
A color theme is one of the first things you should think of when making a design.

Another important point I would like to mention - in your variables tutorial you should point out that $ is the variable operator, thus stating $x = "val" will define X as a variable, and assign a value of "val" to it.

Oh and I agree with all that Roja said.

EDIT:
When I wrote the above you hadn't posted the following post:
