[Opinions Wanted] My Resume Page

Post by RobertGonzalez »

I just got done making a small page for my resume and would be interested in your thoughts on. No, this particular design will never be used in a commercial app, but I had fun with it. So please, let me know what you think about the color scheme and readibility (also, if you can, test out the Print Preview to make sure my print CSS is working).

I tested it is Opera 9, FF 1.5 and IE 6. I don't have Safari or the Linux browsers, so if anyone can view it in them it would be appreciated. Thanks for you input.

PS I left off the 'www.' subdomain. My host was having a hard time resolving it for some reason. I will check it when I get home.

Overall i like it. Clean, simple, to-the-point.

Only thing i would maybe change would be the line spacing for greater readability. If i was being very picky, maybe i would intoduce another subtle color or a gradient or two to lift the page a little and stop it look as flat.

I'll check your site in Safari and Camino on the Mac when i get home tonight.

I'll give you 9.21 out of 10 Image

i like it but i am not sure about the colors. I dont know whats wrong with em but they just dont seam to be too happy. I am also not a fan of frames.

But I do like the simplicity. Its perfect in that aspect. All the info is there without having to look around for it and a simple contact thing for someone to send you a quick email or whatever. Good stuff.

Best part is the - First Aid and CPR (Advanced) - mixed in with all your IT skills :P

Had to throw in the First aid stuff. And those are not frames, they are fixed position divs. Checkout the source.

PS I was thinking about later on adding some gradient fills to the headers in the nav and in the upper fixed div. Although I was also thinking of a happy green color too. Right now I am tireder than male rabbit in a female rabbit shack. I gotta git sum sleeeeeep. Nighty night. And thanks for the feedback so far.

EDIT | OK Shiz, you won me over. Those first aid things were utterly stupid in that list. Thanks for pointing that out. Now for real, nighty night.

Wow, that's impressive.

I really like the text style when typing in the input areas. Also I didn't know red and green could go together without looking like christmas. :P

I'm not too sure of the link hover color. Is it the same as the dark green used throughout the page? It looks a bit lighter, but that seems OK cuz your page also has a fair amount of white.

I clicked the validation links, and they are valid ;).

I also looked at the source to see your div markup. Very lightweight and impressive for the amount of content on the page.

Also, 8O at your resume.

Yo man, style the textarea same as the text inputs.

I like it otherwise. Good stuff.

Looks awesome. Clean, well laid out, readable :)

One tiny issue (technical not conceptual).

Text cut off in header

:D Good work!

The good: It's quite clean, the colors are both consistent, yet not in the "standard" palette.

The bad: The differences in font sizes chosen (most notably between your name and, well everything else) feels rather large. I'd suggest bringing the non-name size up several points, say to 12 or 13. Sure that'll make the page a lot -- visually -- larger, but it will make reading it for some with poor enough vision so much easier. Sure, they could use a screen reader, but not everyone knows about them nor has them installed.

Pretty good. One thing though - I don't like the fixed header, actually, I hate fixed headers/footers and I haven't seen a professional site doing it.

Thanks for the suggestions. They were really good. I adopted just about every one of them (I am keeping the fixed header - although I may toy with 'releasing' it). I toned down the header font size, upped the other fonts, made the textarea the same style as the text inputs. I will probably put some gradient images as backgrounds to the nav headers and I may change the fixed header color, but otherwise, for the time being, I am satisfied.

Thanks again for all of your input.

Oh crap. Ok, I'll get that in a little bit. I am going out with the family at the moment, but I will fix it as soon as I get back. Thanks again everyone!

<opinion>
<nitpick>
  • Make the margins on the content a little larger - farther away from the edges. When something is that close, I'm immediately not sure whether I need to scroll horizontally or not. Granted, all it takes is to more closely examine the page, but that takes sooooo much work ;)
  • Spruce up the header a bit. I like pretty but simple graphics. Despite the schnaziness (sp?) of the page, my immediate, gut reaction was that it wasn't a top quality site because the header was just a bunch of text.
  • The email link in the header needs to lose the underline where it's at. I'd recommend putting that link in a div/span, set the link that is the email to be a block, and add a bottom border. That way, the underline doesn't seem to cut into the 'y' & 'g', and you get some spacing between the underscores as well.
  • It does seem a little flat. Gradients in the header &/or the section headers might make it pop a bit - though that might change the overall feel
  • I'd lose the cool scrolling thing. That certainly has it's place & it's applications, but in a resume, it might seem too flashy (not to mention it might lead others to believe that you used frames - is that something you want to live with ;)
</nitpick>

Very well done. Good choice of complimentary colours (though a third hue might not hurt - just don't ask me which one).

</opinion>
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

Worst input ever coming right up.

A colon after "Your message" would be more consistent :D
