Compare two different UI's for me

It doesn't matter if you do all the error checking in the world, or if you have the most beautiful graphics, if your site or application design isn't usable, it's not going to do well. Get input and advice on usability and user interface issues here.

Compare two different UI's for me

Post by Luke »

I was asked to rebuild this page with a new screen...
http://laresdental.com/products/yag/plat_touch.asp

And this was what I did (It is a really crappy site, with really crappy proprietary code... I didn't build it, so no nagging at me about it)
http://laresdental.com/products/yag/plat_touch.over.asp

My question is this... do you like the method in the first one where the text displays to the sides of the image, or do you like the method I did on the second one where the box just pops up to the direct right of whatever you're hovering over?

I'm not asking for your guys' opinions about any other aspect of the page... because the rest of the site is hideously unusable... I am just wondering about whether you like the popups to pop up on the sides of the image or on the image... which method is better?

I prefer the popup on the image. The first one is a bit distracting having to look around the sides of the image to see where the text is displayed.

I prefer the first one (on the sides)...it just looks cleaner to me.

I like the second one for the same reason brendondonhue does... but my boss likes the first one.. probably for the same reason as burrito....

I don't like either honestly. The first one's page is wide, real wide -- over 1000 pixels wide for the images alone -- and it's image based. The second at least uses text so it has a snowballs chance of being read by a screen reader (although both pages are HORRIBLE in a screen reader.) The images in the second feel more washed out however. I can understand and appreciate the need to reduce their download weight, but there's some quality that seems to have been lost too.

I answered that, and plenty more.

thanks feyd, but...

I agree with you completely. The site is a nightmare. We've been trying to get them to redesign it for a while. I can only spend so much time on this page, and fixing problems like that would take longer than I have.

EDIT: that sounds pretty ungrateful... thanks feyd. I appreciate your input. I just can't really do anything about it.

I vote for the second...as I'm that lazy...I prefer to have something jump out and bite me on the nose rather than look around for textual hints...besides on a small screen res...you might not see the first ones tooltips...until you scrolled...

Number 2...the vote that is :P

I would have a single spot where the text appears, perhaps on top of on the bottom. Hrm..
