You will almost absolutely need chmod, yes.

As for which CMS to use...thats impossile to answer as there are literally 1000's of CMS systems available on the market.

Those you mention, such as Post Nuke or PHP Nuke I feel are slightly antiquated and often bloated and difficult to extend.

Try poking around opensourcecms.com until you find one you like.

Drupal is bi in Toronto, but wordpress might be more appropriate for a personal site.

I always liked the look of expression engine as well, but have never touched it.

By far and away the best, in my opinion is ModX.

I'd vote for drupal due to it's amazing flexibility/extensibility. However it does have a fairly steep learning curve, but once you 'get over the hump' things get easier (or so I'm hoping ;))

Kieran, what exactly do you mean by 'bi in TO'? I'm assuming you mean big :) That being said, do you have any drupal theming experience? :)

8O .......

I did mean big - oops! I guess with the pride parade that was a not-so-obvious typo.

Anyhow, there are a lot of Drupal devs in Toronto. There are monthly Drupal meetups at the linux café downtown (good panini). Generally, Toronto is on of the main Drupal hubs. Vancouver is another, I think.

I have limited Drupal theming experience, having done it twice a few years ago. I have friends who have done a lot more.

@nick: How close are you to Toronto? If I had to guess I'd hazard London/Stratord.

A little too far south, but close.. Currently I am living in Hamilton, roughly 30-40 minutes or so from Toronto (1.5h from London ;))...

I had no idea TO was so big on Drupal.. I'm just starting to try and wrap my head around it, and I'm a little hesitant to attempt to skin up a custom theme until I have a firmer grasp on the rest of the system.

If you're interested in Drupal, you should go to a Drupal event - you're so close to Toronto that it would be a piece of cake.

Walkah's hosting one @ CSI on the 17th that's specifically about theming. You have no excuse not to go!

Let me know when you're in town and we'll get some pho before hand - there's a really good spot across the street from CSI.

Hello guys.

If you're looking for a content management system that is full of features and has a good support - I would suggest using a WebsiteMill Content Management System - http://www.websitemill.net. After struggling with Joomla and Drupal and the limitations on functions that they offer I decided to look for a commercial CMS. WSM just works magic for me.
