Has anyone seen the new BBC website design? http://www.bbc.co.uk/home/beta/

I think its ok...although looking at the source code it has nigh on 200 lines of hack for IE7

Opinions? ...

I couldn't spend more than 1 minute looking at that site before my eyes started to hurt from the high contrast.

Moved to UI-Design/Usability.

The beta looks a lot better than the current.

If we delete a post it is because it is infringing our rules, and you'll be notified accordingly. :)

Is that Beta serious? Looks like someone drank a bit too much of the "web 2.0-lets-get some gradients and nifty js-toggle stuff in there"....

I like old design, new one is too much confusing.
It looks like they are trying to show people "look we are WEB 2.0", while they have forgotten about most important thing - usability.

The new cnn.com is much worse than that =/ They over did the rounded corners and everything looks blah with so much gray in there. At least use some gradients!

cnn or bbc?

Well, if I have to compare the bbc beta to the cnn site, at least the cnn site's design doesn't get in the way of the content. Quite the opposite, I think.

The BBC design has awful typography. For example, verdana for the headers at that size looks horrible. Furthermore, there's no balance or guidance. So much is emphasized, you don't know were to look at first.

All the gradients are way overdone, it looks very amateurish. I won't start on the colors. Or maybe my monitor has been turned too bright by accident ;)

i like it.

the biggest issue i have with it is that it is inconsistent with the rest of the site. this can confuse users.

bit of ajax is all good...

ultimately i think they will start adding more utility to the site otherwise it just aesthetics (even though aesthetics are important for user experience). i like the way they are going with the personalisation and think they should take this further. as an example i would like to see is the ability to book mark programs and when new episodes are shown they are flagged up on the home page.

I agree the BBC site is bad looks-wise. Their intentions were good, but it looks boring and exaggerated. CNN is definitely 5x better that that.

I like it, it's simple.

It's fairly simple and clean, which is good. But I have a few issues:

There's too much crap around everything, they need to focus more on designing the content and less on designing the containers. As it is it's hard to see the actual content.

A clock? I mean really? I have a clock. Everybody does. I'll never go to the BBC site to check the time. Kill it.

Also, search the web as an option? why would I go to the BBC site to search the web? It too should die.

The navigation is a tad screwed as well. How many different navigation areas can you count? Too many. That's how many.

And the favicon is totally unreadable.

Verdict: Good start, but ultimately FAIL.
