Could you make your own hash?

Discussions of secure PHP coding. Security in software is important, so don't be afraid to ask. And when answering: be anal. Nitpick. No security vulnerability is too small.

Could you make your own hash? What would you have to use to do it?

Define 'make your own'. Do you mean create a completely new hash algorithm? Or a PHP implementation of an existing hash (like feyd's sha256 class)?
