[SOLVED] Income tax and VAT in the UK for freelance work

Post by Chris Corbyn »

I need some help from freelancers in the UK.

Does anybody have a any good links to all I need to know about VAT and income tax if I'm working freelance. How much I charge, how I keep a record of it and how & when I pay it to those lovely people at the Inland Revenue

the only other thing I can suggest it to look at some of the companies that handle all that for you. I contacted several when I came to the UK because some of the tax coding can seem quite confusing. What is contracting VS. permanent employment, what can be used as deductions, etc...

I never got to far into it as I ended up in full time permenant employment.

At least they might be able to give you a little more info if you contacted some.

Thanks for the info... I'll look into that. I may just take a trip to the Inland Revenue offices

It's something I need to have a good grasp of since I'm in employment at present looking to go freelance (= + ££££ )

North East England - A web development rich area. Newcastle is a key area too (about 50 miles North of me).

I know this thread is a bit old but I've found the following handy:
- A local business support group. I'm getting a lot of help from Business Gateway here in Scotland (http://www.bgateway.com).
- I would also imagine it is in your bank's best interest to help you, probably through your appointed business advisor.
