common misconceptions of clients

Post by Charles256 »

why do people looking to hire you expect you to be able to network a building, watch the network, build them a website, build one for their clients , and do a billion other side projects? are they <span style='color:blue' title='I&#39;m naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> (testing the censor) crazy? all of that on one man?! Do they think we can go forever? communists. not to mention I am a coder..not a blasted graphic artist..

you seem to forget they don't want to pay for that;) they want to pay for a network admin but want you to do everything else, all done yesterday if you'd be so kind. (okay.the filter doesn't catch basta..you can figure out the last bit)

If you want to avoid the attitude that people have to be able to do things outside of their job description then you need to get a job working for a large company .. but there won't be much chance of using PHP then. It's just an inevitability. You're not going to find a job that's just coding all day long. Small companies don't work that way.

As for not paying, or having ridiculous deadlines .. that's down to the quality of the management .. where I work the deadlines are reasonable and everyone is pretty well paid (especially if you include the profit sharing scheme) .. Mind you, I'm Head of Production, so technically I'm a manager, so I biased.

Yeah, it seems to be that way. But why don't such companies use PHP? Does that mean PHP isn't suitable for large projects?

Now-a-days, it has become a trend where the companies employ one guy who can take care of the work done by two people and they pay one and half times the salary thus saving half of it.

Even in placements in our university, some vacancies are funny, they would expect you to sys admin, network admin and do some web building ...sometimes they could not come up with more

It would be very interesting for the first five years in the IT field to do everything they give you as long as they provide you decent salary. but as years move on, you might come up with other obligations when you feel you need more time to be devoted to the family. Thats when you feel you feel, say instead of working for 45hrs/week and getting 5000US dollars per month, you would prefer working 30hrs/week and earn 3500US dollars which any company would not allow as per the trend now

How many of you feel the same???

The client will be wanting as much as possible, for as little as possible.

So they will be looking to get as few a person as possible to do the job of many, as it will cost less.

There are the "Yes" men who will sit there like nodding donkeys taking on far to much work for their own abilities, just because they want the job.

These "Yes" men soon find themselves in trouble of course, which is always a pleasure to watch. :D

I've always found the client to be happy when I inform them of my limits, but I might have been lucky thus far.

Thats a little deceptive. Yahoo use PHP for some of their admin and management systems. I believe all the user facing stuff is still C.
