Marketing tips for a developer?

Post by lsalsich »

Hey All,

I am a long-time system admin who has no real experience (or talent) in sales and marketing. Typically, I put some glob of code together to create or add to a product and then turn it over to other departments to market and maintain.

Recently, I worked on a large project developing a web-portal (in my spare time on my own time) mostly to keep my skills sharp and to work with code that I felt was challenging. Anyway, a consulting firm is now very interested in 'getting involved with' this project - meaning they want to buy it.

The bad news is that I am clueless as to what to ask for the product code and what to charge to maintain it. I am hoping that some of the other more 'entrepreneurial' members on this board might be kind enough to give me some tips.

Someone I spoke with suggested that the code itself is worth 30-50K and that maintaining the code and server(s) that will power it should be between 2-3K per month. But, I'm not sure if this is too high, too low or what.

If it helps, this consulting form has the potential to bring in more than 1 Million per year in income using this portal. Since it uses Linux and MySQL, its licensing costs are minimal.

I also know that the code itself is worth $30,000 US since it is well-designed and took me at least 200 hours of development time. But, I'm concerned that asking this price will turn them off to the deal?

Please help a tech-nerd with no marketing skills!!!!!!

If you're right that the portal could generate $1m turnover then $50k for the code is underpriced. $400k - $500k would be nearer the money.

However .. I would offer it to them for either a percentage stake in business, or a sweet $200k/year job heading the development.
