Any of you full-time web designers out there feel like second-class citizens at your job? I'd hate to bring up an ancient thread and sound like Milton from Office Space, but the company I work for doesn't really seem to know I exist 90% of the time. However, the second someone asks "how do I email the entire staff?" I get treated like Ben and/or Jerry at the local ice cream fair. They're moving my desk around the office like I'm disposable. Again, not to start a babbling rant or anything, just wondering if anyone else tends too feel 'less than significant' at their place of employment as I am about to start looking for a new job, and wanted to know if this was the norm in the industry. I'm currently at my first full-time web related position, and just thought I'd see if anyone felt the same.

From my experience, developers and such have been treated like gold

I see what you're saying. I can read between the lines... time to change the 'ol deoderant. Sounds like "brut 33, the essence of man" just isn't cutting it anymore huh. Rough couple of days... They're seriously moving me around the office like Milton. I sat at the same desk for three years, and they moved me to another spot yesterday. I call it, "The Ass Spot." However today, some lady says to me "Have you always sat there?" (talking about the new desk), I told her, "Yeah of course." It was funny. Well, not funny if you were me, but funny for everyone else I guess. Then, the HR guy stops by, "Hey, how do you like your new desk?" of which I replied, "Still a crappy job, no matter where I sit." To all those looking for their first job in the corporate world... Saying this wasn't the best decision I've ever made.
Just seems like they don't understand/respect the amount of work that goes in to their precious websites. That's "The Man" for you I guess. Thanks for the input.

I'd say if you can get out, do. It doesn't sound like a healthy environment for you, or your coworkers..

It is not worth working in an environment where they hardly realize the efforts you are putting in and I think there is very less scope there for you for any pay increase or promotion.

In my experience the type of company can make a difference. If the company's core business is technical then chances are you'll be better understood and appreciated, and there will be others with similar interests. Keep that in mind when job hunting. Either find a high tech company or a company with a large IT department. Sometimes web developers are lumped into the marketing department. That may or may not be a good fit for you. Depends on if you're more designer than programmer. Me, I'm a programmer and so would steer away from the the marketing dept, unless there were other programmers or sys admins already there.

I can't say that i share the feeling. Management regularly asks if i'm still happy to work for them... Or if there are things they can do to make my life easier... Must say that i really feel appreciated.. I don't know if my situation is that exceptional.. If it isn't i'd advise to look out for a better work environment.
