How much do you charge for contract work?

Post by Pyrite »

Now that I no longer have a full time job and am back in college again, I only have time for small contract projects. Although I have done some of these before, the amounts I got paid were not really set in stone before the job and were usually just negotiated beforehand, like I didn't go to people with a price sheet of all my services. Perhaps this is an interesting question for like AskSlashdot. But I wanted to ask the phpDN community since my main skills are in php and MySQL. Back in the day it was expensive for making HTML, like $500 a website or even a page. I think now rates are lower because there is so much competition. Anyways, I want to make some kind of a contract work price sheet to attach to my resume online that I can point potential employers to.

What do you charge for contract work for things like PHP (per page, site, hours or lines of code), MySQL (SQL queries and/or design a database), Unix/Linux (configuring or troubleshooting a Unix server or software), Software Applications (in C++ or Java, how do you rate that, by hours?), Hardware (I usually only charge about $60/hour for this and an extra $50 to make a service call), Networking (installing a small home or office network, both software and cabling, do you charge by hour, job, what?), Websites using HTML, CSS, JavaScript.

Those pretty much cover my main skills that I have to offer. Please share your rates for contract work and how you rate individual services. Thanks!

I think a lot depends on where you are located. Differnet markets/areas will have different rates. I own a small IT firm in the Metro D.C. area and charge $100 per hour for PC repair, building small office networks, etc. My competition charges even more. As far as web services go I see people charging around $80 per hour for HTML, CSS, and graphics work. I don't know what the figure is for the more complex stuff like JAVA, PHP, and MySQL. Hope this helps.
