Selling Practices

Post by Charles256 »

So if you've read my other thread you realize I'm approaching a launch date for my photo gallery and wondering how big of a deal was it if I attached a link back at the bottom of the page and perhaps offer a paid version that just removes the link. I realize I may have to switch my license choice from GNU GPL to do this but I still want people to be able to mod the free version with the exception of removing the link. Obviously I can't stop people that are simply going to break the law but I want to set it up so I can potentially make a profit of this product ( nothing huge ) while still making it freely available for whoever wants it and doesn';t mind a small link back. ( think the size of the link back on the bottom of this board. ) Any thoughts?

keep it free.. search the scriptlance type sites for people who want photogallery sites, when they do, point out that you have made "the photogallery software" and do the site using it very quickly, make fast bucks that way instead.

Additionally, viewing projects like this as an addition to the cv and an additional selling point for yourself is always a good approach. Look at feyd, I'm sure he'd be first choice for any job he went in for due to his work on this forum.. you follow?

It'd still be free. The only exception is there'd be a small link. Powered by "insert_name" where insert_name would also be a link and make the font size .7em. Figured it'd be a good way to get some free advertising ?

I think that a link such as what you describe is protected under GPL. Removing it is analogous to removing copyright information, which I believe all licenses frown upon except private label licenses in propritary software.

I personally dislike the idea of "free" software. Especially free as in beer. It depends on how labour and love you have put into the project and what you expect to get back. I started a project today, which I plan on selling commercially because it's going to cost me thousands of dollars to develop (graphics, docs, hosting, etc). If you've done everything yourself and don't mind giving away your time for free, giver!

I'll usee free software, I'm just not sure I'll ever contribute to the cause again. :P

Good Luck :)
